The Pilates Studio | Asheville Pilates Professional Instruction

The Pilates Studio is a professional, dedicated apparatus studio, equipped with a Universal Reformer Trap Table Combo, Wunda Chair, Step Ladder Barrel (equipment by Balanced Body , wall springs, mat space, and resistance-based training accessories. Resistance-based training creates lengthened, flexible muscles that are toned and not bulky.

Pilates is a gentle form of exercise focusing on strength and flexibility of the core – the deep abdominals and muscles of the low back – to improve postural alignment, balance and coordination of the whole body.
Training here at  The Pilates Studio is a truly private and personalized experience.  There is no one else coming and going, no other people in the studio to distract or disrupt you.
There are many different options for practicing Pilates. I believe it is important to address each person individually. This allows me to develop programs that meet unique and specific needs, and allows you to gain competency and confidence in the fundamental principals of Pilates.
Pilates is appropriate for everyone–people of all ages and fitness levels are welcome. I encourage all new clients to begin with private sessions. After gaining competency with the fundamental exercises, you may choose to work in pairs with a partner or friend (Duet session).

what is pilates?

pilates is a body conditioning routine that seeks to build flexibility, strength, endurance, and coordination without adding muscle bulk. in addition, pilates increases circulation and helps to sculpt the body and strengthen the body's "core" or "powerhouse" (torso). people who do pilates regularly feel they have better posture, are less prone to injury, and experience better overall health. while using controlled movements in the form of mat exercises or equipment (called the reformer) you can tone and strengthen the body. for decades, it's been the exercise of choice for dancers and gymnasts (and now hollywood actors), but is a wonderful way to get into shape for anyone. it was originally created by joseph pilates and used to rehabilitate bedridden or immobile patients during world war I.

Thank you for visiting and for supporting a woman-owned, local business in Asheville! Cisco Pilates is one of the only Classical Pilates studios in Asheville, North Carolina. Pilates has been changed over many years and combined with other forms of exercise and ab workouts, but Classical Pilates stays true to Joseph Pilates’ original sequences and intentions.

Cisco Pilates is a small, cozy studio located in a private residence just North of Downtown Asheville, North Carolina, in the Five Points Neighborhood. If you’re looking for an intimate, relaxing, and non-competitive environment with birds chirping outside the window, Cisco Pilates is the place for you! Gyms and large studios aren’t for everyone. Cisco Pilates has capacity for up to two students, and specializes in private and duet classes on the reformer and other equipment, as well as mat classes in another private residence a block away.
What is Pilates?
Pilates is a form of exercise for everybody and every body-type. Using equipment with spring resistance, Pilates tones your body safely and effectively, focusing on mobilizing tight areas and stabilizing and strengthening weak areas. Mat work and mat classes are also a part of the practice. There are six Principles of Pilates: control, concentration, centering, breathing, precision, and rhythm/flow. The goal of Pilates is to have a completely balanced body of strength, flexibility, and control.
No gender, age or physical restrictions apply. Some people start at age 70, some at age 10 or younger. Try a duet with your child, friend, parent, or significant other. Try a private lesson to get the most out of your workout with one-on-one attention and complete privacy. Try a mat class for the fun and flow of it! Who invented Pilates?
Joe Pilates was the genius behind the creation of what he called “Contrology” and is now called “Pilates”. Born in 1883 in Germany, Pilates was a boxer, gymnast, diver, and yogi, who trained injured soldiers as well as the German police force. He emigrated to the United States in 1926 and opened a Contrology studio in New York City with his wife Clara. After Pilates died in 1967, his work was carried on by his wife, as well as several of his students; the most well-known of whom was Romana Kryzanowska. Alexis Miller of Cisco Pilates is a third-generation teacher, certified by Master Teacher Dorothee VandeWalle, who trained with Romana.

Story behind Pilates

Developed by Joseph H. Pilates in the early 20th century, Pilates is a system of comprehensive, whole-body exercises that emphasize breath, concentration, center, control, precision and flow. Each of the more than 500 low impact, flowing movements that make up the Pilates tenet, promotes mental focus to achieve proper breathing, correct postural alignment and smooth execution of the exercise.  As a result, your body moves in safer and more efficient patterns of motion, experiencing a greater sense of balance, vitality and posture.
